Chubb has missed back-to-back contests due to a calf injury, but it looks like he's now progressing toward a return.
Coach Kevin Stefanski also recently expressed optimism that Chubb could retake the field Week 8 against the Steelers, which would provide the team with a significant boost on offense. Though D'Ernest Johnson impressed with rushing yards and a score versus the Broncos, the impact of Chubb's involvement in the ground attack can't be overstated for Cleveland, and getting consisted production between the tackles will be key if Baker Mayfield shoulder is again unavailable.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said he's hopeful that Chubb calf will be able to play in the team's Week 8 game against the Steelers on Oct. Chubb sat out his second straight game Thursday due to his calf injury, and with Kareem Hunt landing on injured reserve earlier in the week with a calf strain of his own, it was D'Ernest Johnson who picked up the start at running back in the Browns' win over the Broncos.
Though Johnson 22 carries for yards and a touchdown did his part to keep the Cleveland ground game rolling, Stefanski would surely welcome the return of Chubb, who is averaging more than five yards per carry for the fourth consecutive season. Because of the longer turnaround for the Week 8 contest, the Browns will resume practicing Monday, so fantasy managers could gain some early clarity on whether Chubb is trending toward a return to the lineup or a third consecutive absence.
The Browns placed backfield mate Kareem Hunt calf on injured reserve earlier Tuesday, and now Chubb himself will miss a second game in a row. With the top pair on the pine, the team will turn to D'Ernest Johnson as the presumed starting running back Week 7, with Demetric Felton and John Kelly available behind him. Chubb's next chance to suit up will arrive Sunday, Oct. Chubb missed his first game of the season in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, with the Browns turning to Kareem Hunt to replace him as the team's lead back.
Hunt suffered a calf injury of his own in the contest that will likely keep him sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, but Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski wasn't ready to rule Chubb out from returning to action Week 7 for a Thursday night matchup with the Broncos. Due to the short week, the Browns may not hold a traditional practice session until Wednesday, which could make it tough to gauge where Chubb stands in his recovery.
Regardless, Chubb will likely need to bump up to at least limited participation on the practice report at some point over the next two days to have a realistic shot at playing Thursday. Nick Chubb's calf injury kept him from suiting up Week 6 versus the Cardinals, but with Kareem Hunt calf now expected to miss multiple weeks and be placed on IR, the Browns backfield is in dire need of a boost.
Not to mention, Baker Mayfield shoulder and Odell Beckham shoulder are both nursing injuries, while Jarvis Landry knee has yet to be brought back to the active roster. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Chubb calf won't be placed on injured reserve, and the running back hasn't been ruled out from returning to action Week 7 against the Broncos on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. D'Ernest Johnson would be a borderline top back.
Chase Edmonds RB. James Conner is a top back until Edmonds returns. Damien Harris RB. As of Tuesday, we don't expect Harris or Rhamondre Stevenson.
If they're both out, J. Taylor and Brandon Bolden would split the touches for the Patriots. Matchups that Matter. Michael Carter RB. NYJ N. Devonta Freeman RB. Tony Pollard RB. Adrian Peterson RB. McKissic RB. Josh Jacobs RB. Week 10 Adds. Jordan Howard RB.
Howard is a high-end flex with good touchdown odds. The risk comes if the Eagles fall down by multiple scores. That's less of a risk against the Broncos. Brandon Bolden RB. Bolden is our favorite Patriots back if both Harris and Stevenson miss time.
But he's still a good PPR flex if even one of them is out. Taylor is a deep add as well. Eno Benjamin RB. Benjamin won't get the full Chase Edmonds role, but he could see 10 touches a game on one of the best offenses in football. D'Onta Foreman RB. Foreman could easily supplant Peterson as the main early downs back.
